Competition
In Belley, in the Bugey, a 1980s aquatic centre is being rehabilitated and extended by Z Architecture, winner of the competition. The low extension wraps around the existing pool hall rather than replacing it: the original timber is reused as cladding, the insulation is biosourced and the roof carries photovoltaics, cutting running costs sharply. The new skin is a perforated timber panel that draws a contemporary moucharabieh, continued by a deep roof overhang that forms a sheltered forecourt. Inside, a 25-metre sports pool, a learners' pool and a water-play area open onto vegetated outdoor beaches.
